# Shared and Private chats

Every chat is either Shared or Private. Credits come from the same workspace pool either way.

| | Shared | Private |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Who can see it | Everyone in the workspace | Only you |
| Who can continue it | Any member | Only you |
| What admins see | The whole chat | Credit totals, never titles or messages |

## Move a chat

Open the **...** menu on the chat and choose **Move to Shared** or **Move to Private**. You can also drag it between the two sections of the sidebar.

Moving a chat to Shared removes nobody's access. Moving it to Private does, so DIA asks first and names who will lose access.

Owners and Admins can restrict these moves in **Settings > Members**:

- **Who can share chats** sets who may move their own Private chat to Shared.
- **Who can make Shared chats private** can be the chat's creator, Owners and Admins, or nobody.

An Owner or Admin can also lock a Shared chat so it stays Shared. The **...** menu has **Lock** and **Unlock**.

## Share a link to a chat

The **Share** button in a Shared chat copies the chat's address. It works for people in your workspace. Anyone else who opens it gets a message that the chat isn't available.

<Callout type="note">
  You can't share a chat with people outside your workspace, or with only some of its members. To show a Private chat to your team, move it to Shared.
</Callout>

## Turn Private chats off

Owners and Admins can turn Private chats off for the whole workspace with **Allow Private chats** in **Settings > Members**, or for one person with the switch in that person's row.
